As we all should hopefully know by now, burning hydrocarbons is not a sustainable way of providing the world with heat and power. In fact that is a massive understatement - it is destroying the planet we live on and the air that we breathe. The Oil, Gas and Coal companies are clinging on for dear life, but not for long. There has been a massive awakening of the general populous and we are starting to force change.
The Chinese Government is not known for listening to what their people want, it is just not the way that the Communist party works. However when it comes to climate change they have not had an option. Due to their inexorable industrialization, pollution of both land and air is being felt on massive scale by the general population to the extent that if you live north of the Huai River your life expectancy is 5.5 years lower than if you live to the south purely because of the air pollution. This has led to huge protests in Beijing and around China. It has led to a massive investment by the Chinese government into renewable energy, so much so that China is now the World’s largest investor in renewable energy. Last year China spent $103,000,000,000 or 36% of the world's total investment into renewable energy! In the last 5 years 40% of all newly generated renewable energy has come from China which surpasses the investment of the U.S and Europe combined. This I think is a sign of things to come; if the Chinese people can tell their communist government what to do then by Jove the rest of the world should be able to do it with very little fuss. (We also would like to highlight that Sweden and Norway are s@!t hot as well when it comes to powering and heating themselves through renewable avenues but that is a story for another time).
Companies are also now moving to a future where they are going to be 100% powered by renewables. Google this week has announced that in 2017 they will be powering all of their data centres and offices for their 60,000 employees with renewable energy. As that is next year this is pretty major and a serious win for the world of renewables, and the World in general! One of the largest companies in the world doing this is setting a benchmark for the rest of them.
So viva la revolution! Let your local MP know your stance on the environment, let the government know that this is the way we want to go! As we the people have the numbers to make them listen, stand up and be counted! Doing your bit has never been more important, gone are the times where the opinion “what difference does it make if i change what I do?” the answer is a lot, the more people that change the way they operate and run their homes the better.
