Why burn oil when there are heat pumps?

Here at de-CO we think Heat Pumps are the best way to heat one's home. Why is this? Well unlike oil or biomass they do not need refueling, they do not burn gas, they use naturally recurring solar thermal energy in the ground or air. Yes they do require electricity to run, but with a Coefficient of Performance (COP - essentially a rating of how efficient an energy source is measured out of 5) at around 4.4 they are super efficient. There are two main types of heat pump that we regularly work on and they are Ground Source (GSHP) and Air Source heat pumps (ASHP).

Basically both GSHP & ASHP are a low-carbon heating systems that extract heat from either the air or the ground, then upgrade into a useable temperature and transfer it to water through a heat exchanger to be used for the heating and hot water at a property. Depending on your location and heating needs, either one or the other of these technologies will greatly improve the efficiency and the cost in the way that you heat your home.

These technologies in our opinion are the only way to heat your home if you need a new boiler or are building a new house off the gas grid. If you don’t have your own woodland to chop down to create chip then the chip cost are only going to go up. With the price of oil expected to increase dramatically we will see this method becoming the norm in England within the next few years.
