Case Study: The Green House, Wiltshire

Project summary:

The new build property pictured above is our most recent project and largest completed to date in Wiltshire. This property has been designed and built to the highest specifications, with a principal focus on making it as energy efficient as possible for a house of this size. Designed from concept as an ecological and modern home the key features include an open-plan innovative design, renewable energy sources, under-floor heating and automation technology.

Project detail:

Further Green were commissioned to design, cost and project manage the installation of renewable energy sources and automation systems into a new-build home in Wiltshire. The customer had the vision of a ecological home which was not reliant on grid-based energy, and with certain features able to be scheduled and managed remotely. The initial plans included provision for a heat pump only.

Through discussions with client, architect, project manager and the main contractor we recommended an energy system based on an The property features a 4 kWh in-roof solar PV system, underfloor heating throughout powered by a Nibe Air Source Heat Pump, For the home automation system we reviewed the client's living habits and focused on the living areas of the home. Basing our design on the Loxone automation system we recommended a combined lighting and window blind system that will provide ease of use for the client, security features, and a customised and secure network with wireless audio system.

As you will see from the figures below the system there are savings to be made on such a project especially if you are moving away from oil or LPG.

Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) info:

- The ASHP unit is a 12 kwh Nibe F2040
- Estimate of the amount of energy required to deliver heating and hotwater: 7,820 kWh.
- Assumed electricity price: 0.1262 p/ kWh
- Estimated cost to run the Heat Pump each year from grid energy: £986.89
- Cost for space heating: £630.13
- Cost for hot water heating: £356.76
- Cost of running the heating and hot water from LPG: £1,531.55
- RHI Income per year: £1,088.51
- Total projected income and savings: £1,633.17

Solar PV Info:

- Total installed capacity of PV system – total kilowatt peak: 4.05 kWh peak
- Total estimated annual output: 3,706.31 kWh
- Total estimated annual CO2 saving: 2294 Kg/Year
- As the property has an Energy Performance Certificate showing a rating of band D or above the client will receive this rate: 0.0418 p/kWh
- Estimated annual income generated from Feed in Tariff (calculated at: <total estimated annual output> x <FIT Rate>) : £154.92 per annum
- Estimated annual income generated from exported electricity to the grid, (calculated at: 50% of <total estimated annual output> x <Export tariff rate>): £90.99 per annum
-Estimated annual electricity savings, (calculated at: 50% of <total estimated annual output> x <customer's electricity tariff>): £233.87 - per annum
- Estimated annual system benefit calculated by adding the above in green: £479.78

Automation information:

A Loxone integrated automation system for interior lighting and window blinds. The system includes:

- One-touch control for lighting systems
- One-touch control for window blinds
- ‘Scene setting’ capability via the multi-function Touch Tree control switch
- Remote control via Loxone app
- Scheduling and location proximity capability
‘- If this then this’ process - for example the blinds can automatically lower during a hot day to maintain the median internal temperature
- System expansion capability for future proofing

A customised network for the house and integrated audio system:

- Due to intricacies of the house design and limited internet coverage in the area it was necessary to build a site-specific network including wifi and hardwired connection. This comprised of a dedicated dual processor multi-band router with beam-forming technology and secure firewall and VPN.

- Integrated audio system utilising Sonos speaker
